How we rank
Listof.Best orders tools so you can scan a category quickly. The order is a popularity signal, not a paid placement and not a claim that one product is “best for everyone.”
Ranking position is never for sale. We do not accept payment to raise a tool in the catalog sort.
What the score is
Each published listing gets a composite score from 0 to 100. Catalog grids and hub tables sort by that score (highest first). The score is rebuilt when we recalculate popularity — it is not a user star rating and we do not show fake “N votes” or “95/100” marketing badges on cards.
Formula in words
We blend several signals, each scaled so large numbers do not dominate, then combine them with fixed weights:
- Brand presence (~50%) — an editorial prior for well-known tools (curated list). This steadies the top of the catalog while traffic data is sparse or noisy.
- Monthly visits (~25%) — public traffic estimates when we have them (log-scaled so mega-sites do not crush everything).
- Outbound clicks on Listof (~15%) — how often people leave our catalog to the official site, counted over the last 30 days.
- Scraped popularity markers (~5%) — third-party counts such as stars or upvotes when present. Weight stays small because these sources are noisy and not our users.
- Helpful feedback (~5%) — anonymous “was this helpful?” votes on our detail pages, when enough exist.
Optional controls (not a paid rank boost): a listing can be pinned to a high floor for a short editorial reason, or demoted if it should not compete for top slots. Demotion also clears public tier badges.
Sources and period
- Clicks: our own logs, rolling 30-day window.
- Visits / scraped markers: enrichment fields on the listing when populated (not every card has them).
- Brand prior: internal curated table maintained by Listof.Best.
- Helpful votes: first-party feedback on listof.best detail pages.
Scores are recalculated in batches. A “Verified” date on a card means we last checked that profile’s facts (pricing, links, specs) — it is separate from the popularity score.
Tiers vs Listof.best choice
- Top pick and Popular — automatic badges from the popularity score crossing draft thresholds (tunable). Empty score or a demoted listing → no tier badge.
- Listof.best choice — a separate editorial flag. Editors mark tools we actively recommend; it is not sold and is not the same as a high score alone.
You can see a high-scoring tool without “Listof.best choice,” and a choice pick that is not the absolute #1 by score.
What we do not claim
- We do not sell rank, badges, or “featured” slots in the default sort.
- We do not treat popularity as a product review or star rating for Google rich results.
- Compare pages show side-by-side specs so you can decide — not an automatic “winner” verdict.
